22 Earthquake Early Warning with GPS Data

چکیده
The combined use of seismic and geodetic observations is now a common practice for finite-fault modeling and seismic source parametrization. With the advent of highrate 1Hz GPS stations the seismological community has recently begun looking at GPS data as a valid complement to the seismic-based methodologies for Earthquake Early Warning (EEW). In the standard approaches to early warning, the initial portion of the P-wave signal is used to rapidly characterize the earthquake magnitude and to predict the expected ground shaking at a target site, before the arrival of the most damaging waves. Whether the final magnitude of an earthquake can be predicted while the rupture process is underway, still represents a controversial issue; the point is that the limitations of the standard approaches when applied to giant earthquakes have become evident after the experience of the Mw 9.0, 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake. Here we explore the application of GPS data to EEW and investigate whether they can be used to provide reliable and independent magnitude estimations. The large size and the complex rupture process, together with the huge number of high-quality GPS records available, make the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake a unique and ideal casestudy for our purposes.

Application of real‐time GPS to earthquake early warning
[1] We explore the use of real‐time high‐rate GPS displacement data for earthquake early warning using 1 Hz displacement waveforms from the April 4, 2010, Mw 7.2 El Mayor‐Cucapah earthquake. We compare these data to those provided by the broadband velocity and accelerometer instrumentation of the Southern California Seismic Network. The unique information provided by the GPS‐based displacement ...

Recently, progress has been made to demonstrate feasibility and benefits of including real-time GPS (rtGPS) in earthquake early warning and rapid response systems. Most concepts, however, have yet to be integrated into operational environments. The Berkeley Seismological Laboratory runs an rtGPS-based finite fault inversion scheme in real time. This system (G-larmS) detected the 2014Mw 6.0 Sout...

[1] The 26 December 2004 Sumatra earthquake (Mw 9.2–9.3) generated the most deadly tsunami in history. Yet within the first hour, the true danger of a major oceanwide tsunami was not indicated by seismic magnitude estimates, which were far too low (Mw 8.0–8.5). This problem relates to the inherent saturation of early seismicwave methods. Here we show that the earthquake’s true size and tsunami ...
متن کاملAdvances in earthquake and tsunami sciences and disaster risk reduction since the 2004 Indian ocean tsunami
The December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami was the worst tsunami disaster in the world’s history with more than 200,000 casualties. This disaster was attributed to giant size (magnitude M ~ 9, source length >1000 km) of the earthquake, lacks of expectation of such an earthquake, tsunami warning system, knowledge and preparedness for tsunamis in the Indian Ocean countries. In the last ten years, sei...
متن کاملApplication of Collocated GPS and Seismic Sensors to Earthquake Monitoring and Early Warning
We explore the use of collocated GPS and seismic sensors for earthquake monitoring and early warning. The GPS and seismic data collected during the 2011 Tohoku-Oki (Japan) and the 2010 El Mayor-Cucapah (Mexico) earthquakes are analyzed by using a tightly-coupled integration. The performance of the integrated results is validated by both time and frequency domain analysis. We detect the P-wave a...
